RM Rail and FFC present a new eight-axle tank wagon for oil product transportation

Eight-axle tank wagon with increased payload designed primarily for transportation of light and oil products to the Far East
RM Rail, Russia's leading manufacturer of freight rolling stock, and the Federal Freight Company presented their joint development: a 15-1271 eight-axle tank wagon (two-section semi-rigid coupling) for transportation of petroleum products. The presentation of a 3D model took place at the International Railway Salon Space 1520 — PRO//Movement.Expo in St. Petersburg.

The new model is being developed by the Engineering Center of RM Rail under the order of FFC JSC. The first prototype will be manufactured at the Company's wagon-building facility, Ruzkhimmash JSC. The eight-axle tank wagon is designed primarily for transportation of light and dark oil products to the Far East. Its key advantages include an increased payload of 150 tons and a larger tank shell volume of 184 cubic meters; thus, it can carry 13.5% more oil products compared to the existing tank wagon models in a conventional 988-meter long train.

Aleksandr Kulikov, Deputy CEO for Sales of RM Rail:
"Specialized rolling stock is a priority area of RM Rail's development strategy. The Company has all the competencies and technology to create innovative products. FFC JSC is our long-standing partner, the cooperation with which makes it possible to create unique models with improved technical specifications. Considering the importance of this topic for the state, all work on the manufacture of an eight-axle tank wagon are carried out in a short time. Now we are actively preparing for the tests and plan to obtain the certificate in H1 2024."

Viktor Voronovich, CEO of FFC JSC:
"The Federal Freight Company has been tasked with arranging the development, manufacture, and certification of eight-axle tank wagons, as well as obtaining the relevant exclusive rights. The use of such rolling stock will contribute to implementing strategic goals of increasing the carrying capacity of railroads, including on the limiting directions of the Eastern area due to the growth of the line load without the need for significant investments in the modernization of the public infrastructure. Together with our colleagues from the Technical Policy Department of Russian Railways JSC, we determined the tank wagons design with the best technical and commercial parameters for all the participants of the transportation process. For this purpose, we compared eight-axle tank wagon and four-axle tank wagon models currently available in the market, including those with increased tank shell volume. The specification analysis showed that the most attractive option is an eight-axle tank wagons, with a two-section semi-rigid coupling. Upon the completion of research and development, from 2024 to 2026, we plan to purchase up to 10 thousand eight-axle tank wagons to provide the necessary rolling stock for the increasing volume of oil and oil product transportation."
